Work During the Time of Covid-19

It will surprise no one that we are living through one of the most trying and difficult times in our lifetimes. Being separated from friends and loved ones due to this illness has taken a huge toll on everyone. And being stuck inside with family members for breakfast, lunch and dinner gives a new meaning to “quality family time”.

As an entrepreneur without a boss to report to I am finding it really difficult to get work done. I have worked from home for many years without an issue so the fact that this time is so challenging is giving me pause. Yes, I am anxious about the health of my loved ones and am missing life as I knew it a mere month ago. What I realize is that I am used to a routine: pre-Virus, I would wake up the same time Monday-Friday and take an exercise class at 8 am, unless I had an early morning client in which case I would be at my office by 7:30 am.

Living out of NYC temporarily I am waking up “whenever” without an alarm and working “whenever” I have a client. I am uncomfortable with my lack of structure, but I am trying to find the silver lining here. I have been taking walks each day and listening to podcasts. Some are business related and have given me some really good ideas. Others are more entertaining, funny or of the true crime variety a secret obsession).

Also, I have changed around my workouts and started doing mat classes with my daughter and meditating afterwards. I started meditating coincidentally at the end of January and it is something I have tried to do many times unsuccessfully. I now cannot live without it, even if I only do (and often do) only 5 minutes a day I feel it is helping to center me during this trying time. I have been doing the guided mediations on the Peloton app, but there are many others that are wonderful.

My business is pretty quiet right now as many of my clients and potential clients are in “wait and see” mode which makes perfect sense. If this is you, I am here for you when you need me or if you just want to connect for a quick call or touch base. I am spending this time studying the job market and asking smart people a lot of questions. Look for my next blog post on what to expect for the post Covid job search.

Stay well and be healthy!
